Six days on São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, was one of the best nature-filled trips I’ve ever taken. It blew away the winter cobwebs and gave us exactly the dose of green, open countryside we needed. Here are my five favourite places on the island, plus a few tips if you’re planning your own trip.

1. Parque Terra Nostra, Furnas

A beautiful botanical garden in the volcanic valley of Furnas, full of giant ferns, old trees and winding paths. The star is the huge thermal pool, warm and an earthy orange colour from the iron-rich water. Wear dark swimwear, as the water can stain lighter fabrics.

2. Ponta da Ferraria

On the island’s rugged west coast, Ponta da Ferraria is a natural rock pool where hot volcanic spring water meets the cold Atlantic. Swimming in the sea while warm water bubbles up around you is something I’ll never forget. It’s best visited around low tide, when the water is at its warmest.

3. Praia da Amora

A wild, secluded beach on the south coast, framed by dramatic cliffs and clear water. It takes a bit of effort to reach, but that’s part of its charm, as you’re likely to have it almost to yourself.

4. Poça da Dona Beija, Furnas

A collection of warm thermal pools surrounded by lush greenery, also in Furnas. It’s a smaller, cosier alternative to Terra Nostra and the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

5. The pineapple greenhouses at Santo António

São Miguel is famous for its pineapples, grown in traditional glasshouses. Visiting one is a lovely, unexpected slice of island life, and tasting the fruit fresh is a treat.

Tips for visiting São Miguel

Hire a car. It’s the easiest way to reach the hot springs, beaches and viewpoints, many of which are well off the main routes.

Pack for every season. The weather changes quickly, so bring layers, a waterproof jacket and swimwear, often all on the same day.

Give yourself time. Six days felt just right for exploring at a relaxed pace, with time to linger in the hot springs.

Half of these photos were taken on my Canon 5D Mark III and half on my iPhone 6, proof that a beautiful place does a lot of the work for you! This trip was before I bought my Fuji X-T2, which later became my travel camera.
