Rosie, Andy and their two boys met me on a beach in Santa Pola to celebrate a big milestone: their first anniversary of living in Spain. We spent a few glorious hours in the afternoon sunshine together, and along the way, Rosie and Andy got some of the only couple photos they’ve had taken since their wedding day.

Marking one year of a new life in Spain

Moving to a new country is a huge step, and the first year is full of firsts: new homes, new schools, new routines and new favourite places. The Altys wanted to mark that moment, capturing their family as they are now, settled into their life by the sea.

As someone who also made the move from the UK to Spain, I love these sessions. A photoshoot is a lovely way to pause and look at how far you’ve come, and photos like these become treasured reminders of the early days of a new chapter.

A beach session full of sunshine and play

With two energetic boys, the afternoon was all about having fun. We explored the beach, played in the sand and let the boys lead the way, while I captured the moments in between, the laughter, the cuddles and the little looks between parents and children.

Sneaking in some couple photos

The best part? Rosie and Andy got a few minutes on their own, and we sneaked in some romantic couple photographs too.

Afterwards, they told me that in 14 years together, the only photos taken of them as a couple were from their wedding day. That made those few minutes even more special, for them and for me.

It’s something I hear often. Parents are usually the ones behind the camera, and they rarely appear in the family photos, let alone get photos of just the two of them. If you’re booking a family session, I always recommend setting aside a few minutes for couple portraits. It’s quick, easy, and often the part people treasure most.

Santa Pola, just south of Alicante city, has a wide choice of beaches, from long, open stretches of sand to quieter spots. There’s plenty of space for children to run around, beautiful afternoon light, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy for families to feel at home in front of the camera.

Ask for couple photos. Even ten minutes can give you photos you’ll love for years.

Mark a milestone. A move abroad, an anniversary or a new baby are all great reasons to book a session.

Choose afternoon or golden hour. Warm, soft light makes for natural, flattering photos.

Let the children play. Relaxed, happy children make for the best family photos.
