The Vrancken family’s photoshoot on San Juan beach was a sunny afternoon of sandcastles, sea air and plenty of time on the swings. It’s a great example of why Playa de San Juan is one of my favourite places in Alicante for family photos: there’s space to play, beautiful light, and everything you need close by.

A relaxed afternoon by the sea

The best family photos rarely come from lining everyone up and asking them to smile. They come from letting children be children. For the Vranckens, that meant digging in the sand, running to the water’s edge and taking a break at the play area when the swings became too tempting to ignore.

My job was to follow along and capture it as it happened: the laughter, the sandy hands and the little moments between parents and children that are over in seconds. The bright afternoon sun, white sand and blue sea did the rest.

Why San Juan beach is perfect for family photoshoots

San Juan beach stretches for kilometres along the coast just north of Alicante city, so even on busy days there’s room to find a quiet spot. For families, it ticks every box:

• Space to explore. The long, wide beach means children can run, play and explore without feeling crowded.
• A play area right by the sand. When little ones need a change of scene, the swings and playground keep the energy up and make for lovely, natural photos.
• Classic Mediterranean scenery. Palm trees, white sand and bright blue sea give a beautiful backdrop all year round.
• Easy practicalities. Cafés with drinks, snacks and toilets are only a short walk away, which makes a big difference with young children.
• Simple to get to. It’s easy to reach from the city centre by tram or car.

Tips for a family beach photoshoot in Alicante

Choose the right time of day. Late afternoon and the hour before sunset give soft, warm light that’s flattering for everyone. In summer, avoid the middle of the day, when the sun is at its harshest and the sand gets hot.

Dress for comfort. Light fabrics in soft, coordinating colours work beautifully against the sand and sea. Bare feet are encouraged!

Bring a change of clothes. Children and the sea are rarely kept apart for long, and that’s often when the best photos happen.

Plan around little ones. Book a time that fits naps and mealtimes, and bring a snack. Happy children make for relaxed, natural photos.
