How I Got My Editing Time Back Without Giving Away My Margins

When my daughter was born, I made a decision: I wasn’t going to spend her first years disappearing into a laptop every evening after she’d gone to sleep. Editing is the part of this job that happens off the clock, out of sight, and I didn’t want it eating the time I actually wanted to be present for.

So I did the obvious thing first — I hired a photo editor to take it off my plate.

They were great; they understood what I needed, but it took time to brief them and send them the images, then time for them to do the job, and then time to review. I needed it done fast. Clients want a quick turnaround; can you blame them?

On paper it solved the time problem. But when I actually sat down with the numbers, the maths didn’t hold up. Outsourcing was taking a big enough bite out of every booking that it stopped feeling like a smart trade — I was buying back evenings at a cost my margins couldn’t really absorb long-term.

So I went looking for a way to get that time back without handing over a slice of every wedding to do it. That’s how I found Imagen AI, an AI-powered editing and culling platform built specifically for photographers. This isn’t a sponsored post I was asked to write — it’s a genuine referral link, which means if you sign up through it, we both benefit. I’ll explain exactly how below. But first, what it actually does.

What Imagen AI Actually Does

Imagen isn’t a filter or a preset pack. It’s a system that learns your editing style — your colour choices, your exposure preferences, the way you consistently treat skin tones or shadows — and then applies that style across an entire gallery, automatically.

In practice, that means:

  • Culling — it groups similar shots and flags your likely keepers, based on quality, composition, and focus, so you’re not scrolling through 4,000 near-identical frames at midnight.
  • Personal AI Profile editing — once it’s learned your style, it batch-edits colour, exposure, and white balance across a full shoot in your voice, not a generic one.
  • AI composition and masking tools — cropping, straightening, subject and background masking, for the local adjustments that used to eat the most time.
  • Retouching tools — skin smoothing, object removal, denoising, and more, several of which are currently free while in beta.
  • Cloud storage — an optional add-on so your galleries are backed up as they’re processed, not just sitting on one hard drive.
  • Lightroom integration — it works directly with your existing Adobe Creative Cloud catalogue, so it slots into your workflow rather than replacing it.

You still make the final call. You review, tweak, and approve — but the technical heavy lifting, the part that used to take hours, happens in the background.

I run every photoshoot I do through ImagenAI. From a quick 1-hour branding shoot for a local business through to a 3-day wedding. I start with culling, then do my own human checks. I then send it through the colour editing phase, do my checks again, then export to Lightroom to do my next round.

Why This Is a Business Decision, Not Just an Editing One

Here’s the part I actually want you to sit with, especially if you’re newer to this industry: the biggest threat to a photography business usually isn’t a lack of clients. It’s a lack of capacity.

Every hour you spend editing is an hour you’re not shooting, not marketing, not resting, not doing the things that actually grow the business or keep you in it long-term. Tools like Imagen don’t just give you evenings back — they change your unit economics. Faster turnaround means happier clients, better reviews, more referrals, and the ability to take on more work (or the same work, without burning out) without hiring an editor.

That’s the lens I look at every tool through now: not “does this make a nicer photo,” but “does this make my business more sustainable.” It’s a question I think doesn’t get asked enough in this industry — and it’s exactly the kind of thing I want to dig into more here on the blog, and eventually in more depth for anyone serious about building a photography business that actually works.

The Offer, and Full Transparency

If you want to try it, here’s my referral link. Sign up through it, and you’ll get 1,500 free photo edits to test the platform properly on your own galleries — no credit card required.

To be upfront: this is a referral link, which means I may also receive a benefit if you sign up through it. I wouldn’t share it if I didn’t genuinely use and rate the tool — but I think you deserve to know that plainly.

On pricing, once you’re past the free edits: Imagen offers a pay-as-you-go plan (per-photo pricing with a small monthly minimum that rolls over if unused) and a Limitless flat-fee plan for solo photographers who want unlimited editing, retouching, and culling for one predictable monthly cost. Personally, I use the pay-as-you-go option as this works super well with my seasonal peaks of work.

Where This Is Going

This is the first of a few posts I’m planning on the business side of running a photography business — the stuff nobody teaches you in a photography course. If that’s useful to you, keep an eye on this space!

Let’s create some magic — and get a bit of your evening back while we’re at it.
